PURPOSE: Practice identifying and using homophones/homographs

LEVEL: Lower Intermediate / Intermediate

DESCRIPTION:

This handout can be used as a stand-alone activity, though originally it was designed to follow up “A Letter About Going To The Cinema” worksheet in order to offer the learners more practice on “confusing words” (those which sound similar but are spelt differently) as well as on using capital letters in words for days of week and using the correct punctuation signs in the end of sentences. If used as the follow-up, this activity can be used as a homework task or as a little next-lesson-test to check how good the learners remember the previous lesson material. As soon as similar activities are widely used by most awarding bodies in their official tests and the skills mentioned above are often the main points of check, additional practice is only for the benefit of your learners.

NOTE: It is important to draw learners’ attention to the letter layout and explain that in a real letter there is no need to start each sentence with a new line, while the this handout the text is split into separate lines for the task purpose: numbering the lines makes it easier to check and discuss the answers.

As a follow-up activity, the learners can be offered to brainstorm different ways of starting and finishing an informal letter. Another option for an extension activity would be to ask the learners to write a letter about their own experience of going to the cinema following the pattern or using own ideas.
